What Is a Self-Cleaning Spa?
If you have ever wondered what a Self-Cleaning spa is, you are not the first! For anyone that has previously owned a hot tub or swim spa, the idea that a spa can completely take care of itself sounds too good to be true.
So, can spas actually clean themselves? Keep reading below to find out what you need to know about Self-Cleaning spas.
What is Self-Cleaning
Essentially, when a spa is being labeled as Self-Cleaning, it is referring to the type of filtration system it uses, indicating that less maintenance is involved, and owners will save both time and money. It does not mean that the spa takes care of itself entirely, but it removes a good bit of work.
Spa water filtration is designed to keep the water in the spa clean, and since all spas have water filtration, does that mean that all spas are Self-Cleaning? Technically, yes. However, all spas require maintenance and the level or amount of maintenance may vary based on some additional ‘Self-Cleaning’ features.
In simple terms, a Self-Cleaning Hot Tub or Self-Cleaning Swim Spa has incredibly efficient filtration and an automatic dispensing system for the sanitizer.
- For the filtration factor, a 24-hour filtration pump is used along with a pressurized filter, this catches more debris more efficiently, leading to less cleaning and electricity usage. This is the same type of filter system used in a large swimming pool.
- For the automatic dispensing part, the inline system will continually add sanitizer to the water at your desired rate, which is more convienent than having a floating dispenser.
- It is important to keep in mind however that this system doesn’t have the ability to test the balance (pH and alkalinity levels) of the water. This is done by using test strips, or bringing a water sample to Zorra and having it professionaly tested – free of charge.
It may be better to think of a Self-Cleaning spa as a low maintenance spa instead, that way there isn’t any misunderstanding about the fact that there will always be some type of owner responsibility in ensuring that a spa is properly cared for.
What to Look for in a Self-Cleaning Spa
Some spas will be more effective than others at filtering and cleaning the water, sp it helps to know what to look for and what is considered the leading technology on the market. Hydropool spas are equipped with a built-in floor vacuum that automatically cleans the bottom of the tub while the surface debris is also being removed. Perhaps most impressive is that Hydropool Self-Cleaning system filters 100% of the water every 15 minutes!
While you will still need to do a little bit of work, a true Self-Cleaning spa can help take a good portion of maintenance work away, giving you more time to use it, and less time spent maintaining it.
