How Do I Fix A FLO Error On My Hot Tub?

One of the most common tech support calls we get is “How do I fix a FLO error?”, in this article we’ll go over some of the more common solutions to this problem.

Understanding What A FLO Error Is

FLO is short for flow, on some hot tubs controls it may be displayed as three dashes (– – –), and on models with a full screen, it may read out “Persistent NO FLO, all off – Check Filter, pump, blockage, air lock and water level”. This last message gives us the most information, it outlines the most common causes of the dreaded FLO error.

How To Fix a FLO Error

In order for your hot tub to function properly, it needs to be able to circulate, filter, and heat water. If the flow of water is weakened or reduced, then the computer will sense this and disable all pumps and heaters to avoid possible damage to them. Below is a list of causes, sorted most to least common.

Checking Your Filter

By far the most common cause of a FLO error is a clogged filter, the easiest and fastest way to check this is by simply removing the filter and reassembling the filter assembly without it. To reset the error, turn off the electrical breaker, wait 15 seconds, and turn it back on. This is not a permanent solution, but it won’t hurt the hot tub to run without a filter for a little while. If the error goes away and doesn’t come back after 5 minutes, then we know that the filter is the problem and needs to be replaced, typically speaking a filter will last for about a year before it should be replaced. Check out the video below fore more detailed filter cleaning information.

Verifying The Water Level

Another common cause of a FLO error is the water level being too low, this allows the pump to suck up air bubbles from the surface of the water. A mix of air and water passing through the flow sensors will confuse the computer and make it display the FLO error. The water level should be completely covering all the jets, typically the ideal level is 1” above the top jets, and 1” below the headrest.

Removing An Airlock

A hot tub pump can only pump water, not air. If there is a large air pocket stuck in any part of the hot tub’s plumbing, it can prevent the water from lowing. This typically only happens after a drain and fill, but can happen if the water level gets too low as well. If your hot tub has a pressurized filter system, then the easiest way to remove an airlock is by bleeding the air out of the filter assembly. If your hot tub uses a non-pressurized filter system, then the easiest way is to follow the instructions in our article here. Checking For Blockages

If there is an obstruction or blockage anywhere in the plumbing, this can restrict flow and give us the FLO error. The most common blockages are typically a buildup of leaves, biofilm, or kids’ toys. 9 times out of 10 the blockage is in the heater manifold (the shiny stainless-steel tube in the access panel area), we recommend having a trained technician out to remove this blockage as it is possible to damage the sensors if you’re not careful. Checking The Pump

This is the least common cause of a FLO error, but it can still happen. If a pump is failing or has failed, then it will not be able to move enough water to keep the computer happy. If you don’t see any water movement, or if you hear loud humming or grinding noises when the pump is on, then it is a good indication that the pump needs to be serviced or replaced. Conclusion

The odds are, if your hot tub is showing a FLO error, then you probably need a new filter, or to simply top up the water level. If you’re still not sure, then you’r always welcome to give us a call at 519-423-6703 or send us an email at support@zorrahottubs.com for more personal support.
